The National Film Development Committee was formed by thegovernment on July 26, 1980 to outline the ways to improve Malaysian filmindustry. As the results from their recommendations, Malaysia National FilmDevelopment (or FINAS) was formed in the year 1981 through Malaysian FilmCorporation Development Act, 1981 (Act 244). FINAS started to operate from theaddress of No. 7 Jalan Ampang Hilir, Kuala Lumpur exactly on November 1, 1981under the Ministry of Trade and Industry Malaysia. Later, on October 16, 1986,FINAS was placed under the Ministry of Information. FINAS then changed itsaddress to No. 198 Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur before shifting to Merdeka StudioComplex, Hulu Kelang, on December 19, 1988. Beginning March 27, 2004, FINAS wasplaced under the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage Malaysia and theauspices of the agency under the Ministry of Information Arts & CultureHeritage began in 2008. Now since April 2009 FINAS is an agency under theMinistry of Information, Communication & Culture.
